RBS Server Racks

RBS Bespoke Server Racks

The Royal Bank of Scotland identified a requirement to store hundreds of IT servers within a new computer room,  with a specific need to access in and around each item for the purposes of servicing and repair.  After carefully evaluating various proprietary systems, non was found to be fully suited to the task, placing the entire project in jeopardy - it was at this point that CUBIC was engaged to solve the problem.

After an initial meeting with the client and their project consultants, CUBIC fully captured the brief and designed a purpose made, pre-fabricated system that allowed the project to proceed.

The clear design objective was to get the footprint of each individual rack to sit within a standard 600 x 600 floor tile, so that cable services could be managed via the surrounding raised access floor tiles.

Minimal height to the top working level was also an important design consideration as keyboards were required in certain locations , so every mm saved was critical.

Stability, access and work flow were also key to the success of the project so CUBIC undertook a detailed space planning exercise to optimise both the quantity and layout of the units.

Comprehensive cable management was achieved using special trays fixed to the rear of the units.  Dedicated fixing plates insured that Olson strips could be fitted to power up the units.

Excellent air flow characteristics were achieved by the use of perforated steel shelves and end panels.

  • From initial brief to agreed design took only 7 working days.
  • From instruction to proceed, units were manufactured inside 3 weeks.
  • The units were installed on site over the course of one weekend.
